Mexico has emerged as an important player in the production and international trade of blueberries, predominantly the blue variety, according to Mexico's Secretariat of Agriculture and Rural Development. This success can be attributed to the diverse climates and conditions that prevail across different regions, fostering optimal growth and increased production.
As a result, Mexico has secured its position as the eighth-largest exporter of fresh blueberries globally for the past four years. The country achieved export sales totaling $490 million, with an average annual growth rate of 15.5%.
According to the source, the United States remained the primary destination for Mexican blueberry exports, accounting for 94.9% and experiencing an average annual growth rate of 16.1%. Japan was the second-largest consumer, with a share of 2.2% and an average annual growth rate of 2.4%. Canada took the third spot, representing 0.6% and a steady average annual growth rate of 2.4%.
In contrast, Mexico's blueberry imports over the last four years were mainly of the red variety from the United States, averaging $36.4 million with an annual growth rate of 8.3%.
