In Spain areas dedicated to organic production increased by almost 1 million hectares between 2008 and 2018.
In Spain areas dedicated to organic production continue to grow, according to data from the Ministry of Agriculture which estimated at 8% growth for 2018.
In its annual report, MAPA (Ministerio de Agricultura, Pesca y Alimentación) estimates the area of organic production at 2 246 474.5 hectares for 2018, an increase of 8% over the previous year. Over the period 2008-2018, the country recorded an extension of nearly 1 million hectares of its areas dedicated to organic production. This performance positions Spain, for years, as the country with the largest biological area in Europe.
According to the ministry's report, the number of organic operators reached 44,282, or 6% more than the previous year, including 39,505 producers and more than 4,000 processors and other traders.
Although per capita spending in Spain is still low, the upward trend continues at € 46.5 per capita per year, double the € 21.85 for organic products in 2013.
