The region of Valencia has lost 20% of its surfaces of stone fruit in the last 5 years and 35% over the last 10 years.
The producer organization AVA-ASAJA saw a decrease of 20% in the area dedicated to stone fruit.
According to the study of AVA-ASAJA (Producers Association), the Valencia region has seen a sharp decline in its area devoted to stone fruit. Surfaces of plums, apricots, peaches and nectarines reduced from 20,010 hectares in 2006 to 16,088 hectares this year. This decrease represents 20%
over the last 5 years and 35% over the last 10 years (24,877 hectares in 2002).
AVA-ASAJA reports that the decline is due to several reasons: reduced profitability and abandonment of farms, the E. Coli, a price collapse, and finally the partial replacement by khaki crops.
