Production and Export of Deciduous Fruit in 2006

During 2006 in South Africa, deciduous fruit contributed approximately 20% to the gross value of horticultural products of the country. About 360.000 tons of deciduous fruit were sold locally on the major fresh produce markets, other markets and directly to retailers which represents a decrease 9% compared to the 392.000 tons sold in 2005.
The exporting of pears, table grapes, peaches, apricots and plums is a major earner of foreign exchange for South Africa. In previous season 39% of deciduous fruit produced was exported.
Total exports amounted 558.000 tons and this is decrease 13% comparing to season 2004/05.
