In France, the white garlic production area of Lomagne IGP covers 200 communes spread over 2 departments (Gers, Tarn-et-Garonne) and covers 187 hectares. The kickoff of the 2019 harvest has started.
The first plots of white garlic from Lomagne PGI were harvested on Wednesday 19 June. The harvest should be spread over a fortnight. The aim is to get the crop back as soon as possible in order to start the drying period and be ready to start marketing around July 20th, just after the official launch of the French garlic marketing campaign, which this year will be held on July 18th.
This year, despite the cool temperatures of April and May, which have slightly delayed production, all conditions are right for a good harvest. Quality is at rendezvous, the quantity will depend on the calibres but should be in a good average. The business outlook is also favorable.
The white garlic of Lomagne IGP is in the form of generous bulbs, of a caliber greater than 45 mm, marketed in bulk or braided. Its round pods are pearly white. Caliber and presentation are selection criteria certified by the specifications of the PGI. The potential production is 1300 tons.
