The Austrian market has good prospects for Peruvian ginger, according to Marcela Andía, the Minister Counselor of the Peruvian Embassy in Austria, who participated in the virtual forum "Profile of the ginger market in Austria", organized by the Association of Exporters (ADEX), the academic centers of Adex (Ceadex) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (RR.EE.).
At her speech in the forum, Andía added that economic projections, based on market studies realized by functionaries of the Peruvian embassies abroad, proved that Austria is a country with a strong potential within the European Union.
Foreign trade would be the driving force behind its economy, despite the impact of the pandemic. At the end of 2021 it would increase by 1.4%, however, its recovery would only begin - with levels prior to the pandemic - the next year with a rise of 2.3%.
She stressed that in 2020, Austrian imports of Peruvian ginger reached $ 1.7 million.
Andia also highlighted that Peruvian ginger exports are favored by a preferential tariff of 0 percent as a result of the signing of the Multiparty Trade Agreement with the European Union.
Today, Austrian consumers are increasingly concerned about the origin of the crop and its quality; therefore, certification and sustainability are very important elements in that destination.
The price of organic ginger (most popular presentation) in the Austrian market can range from 15.2 to 15.7 euros per kilo (16-18 dollars), and can be Chinese, Brazilian or Peruvian.
Non-organic ginger costs between 5.70 to 14.28 euros per kilo (from 6.7 to 16.9 dollars).
Regarding the type of packaging or container, Marcela Andía explained that Peruvian ginger can be offered in cardboard or paper boxes, also in transparent bags or in plastic plates wrapped in foil.
