After two years of negotiations, 9 Turkish companies are allowed to export their cherries to China. Turkey has been an important part of global cherry production for many years with an annual production of about 400 000 tonnes, accounting for one fifth of world production. 70 000 tonnes are sent to European countries and Russia but the Chinese import conditions are particularly difficult and this is a great victory for Turkish exporters.
The aim of this season is to export 15 to 20 tons to promote Turkish quality to Chinese consumers. Currently, the vast majority of Chinese exports of cherries are made from the United States, Chile and the Chinese market, buyer of 100 000 tons of cherries, could be an opportunity for Turkey. Up to now, Turkey has not been able to sell cherries to countries like China, Japan and Thailand and only in small quantities in Singapore, Hong Kong and Malaysia.
One of the companies authorized to export is Alanar, already well known for its exports all over the world. Its CEO states that this first year is a first-class test and that all varieties will be sent: the Ziraat 900, Regina and Royal King, among others.
