In 2020, Mexican watermelon production reached 1 million 357 thousand tons, which means a growth of 1% compared to 1 million 346 thousand tons produced in 2019, according to the Mexico's Secretariat of Agriculture and Rural Development (SADER)
In global terms, Mexico is the eleventh greatest watermelon producer, with a global share of 1.3% and an Average Annual Growth Rate (TMAC) of 7.2%.
According to the Food and Agriculture Information Service (SIAP), in 2020, Mexico exported 733 thousand tons of this fruit, which made it the second exporting country, after Spain.
According to the federal agency, watermelon consumption per capita in Mexico reaches 4.6 kilograms. Its participation in the national production of fruits is 5.7%.
The United States is the main destination for Mexican watermelon exports, with around 750 thousand tons purchased per year. Thus, Mexico was positioned as its main supplier, with sales exceeding 149 million 758 thousand US dollars.
In this ranking, Japan and Canada took the second and the third places, respectively.
