Morocco bets on asparagus continuous growth
Few years ago there were only 3 companies producing asparagus, today there are 7 ones located throughout the North and the South of the Country: Agadir, Kénitra, Loukos, Marrakech and Dakhla. The asparagus is one of the niche products on which Morocco is investing to develop new markets for exports and make the fruit and vegetables sector more dynamic by playing the card of diversification. Furthermore, the demand is increasing in Europe.
On May 18, Morocco had exported something more than 2,200 tons of asparagus, with an increase by 31% compared to the same period last year (620 T Souss, 265 T Nord and 1326 Gharb-Saïs).
Experts say the best period for Morocco to export asparagus is between January and April, as in this period the European products (from Greece and Spain) and the supply of asparagus from Peru are absent.
Two varieties of asparagus are cultivated in Morocco: the green and the white one. The white asparagus is mainly exported in Northern European markets like Germany, United Kingdom and Switzerland while the green asparagus is more considered as a Mediterranean product and it is mostly consumed in Spain, Italy, Greece and the South of France.
