Strawberry season started in Germany

Start of the new season of strawberries in Germany, where the Ministry of Food and Agriculture announced the figure of 142 780 tons of strawberries produced in 2013 (155,828 tons in 2012).

The productions of strawberries occupied 19,434 hectares last year, and the main producing regions are: Niedersachsen (4,307 hectares), Nordrhein-Westfalen (3573 ha), Baden-Württemberg (3872 ha), Bayern (2366 ha). There are many varieties, about 1,000, according to the ministry, but the main ones are Elsanta, Flair Clery.

The consumption of strawberries remains almost constant at 3.5 kg per capita. Germany imported last year 110,787 tons of strawberries, in particular from Italy and Spain, the Netherlands. The country exported 11,802 tons to Austria, the Czech Republic and France.
