Italy
Saturday 01 September 2007
The regional Department for Agriculture of Sicily, South Italy, has requested the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) acknowledgment for the typical purple artichoke. The documentation for the request has been presented in the last days and yesterday morning it was transmitted to the Directorate General for the quality of agro-food products at the Agriculture ministry in Rome, as to start the procedure for the registration of the Community brand.
“The possibility for the purple artichoke to be acknowledged with this European trademark is a further step forward for the valorization of our local productions - Sicily’s Agricultural councillor Giovanni La Via commented -. This means for us triple opportunities: more added value for the product, protection against fakes and counterfeits and warranty for consumers that specific production procedures have been respected”.
