Imports of zucchini from Morocco to the European Union have been experiencing an impressive improvement in recent years. In 2007 the EU purchased from Morocco 65,000 tons of zucchini, compared to 41,811 tons in 2006, which meant an increase by 35.68%.
Spain is one of the biggest importers of Moroccan zucchini, purchasing a total of 7,407 tons from the neighbouring Country. The Spanish Federation of Producers and Exporters’ Association FEPEX highlights that there was a rise by 28% of zucchini imported by Spain from Morocco in 2007 compared to 2006.
For the 2007/08 campaign (1st October 2007-20 April 2008), Morocco could export to the European Union a total amount of 20,000 tons, as established through the Association Agreement sealed between Morocco and the EU.
However, on the 10th of January Morocco exceeded such quota. Therefore FEPEX stresses that, beginning from that date, Morocco has to respect a reference entry price for zucchini fixed at 69.2 euros/100 kilos through the period 1st April-31st May. If Moroccan exporters don’t respect this price, they will have to pay some additional 15,62 euros/100 kilos.
