CIitrus fruit: Murcia bet on Asia
Spain

“The start of the regional citrus fruit campaign has been good”, declared the general secretary of ASAJA Murcia, Mr. Alfonso Galvez Caravaca. “There is a high quality and prices are much better than previous campaigns. Producers are forgetting the adverse results of latest campaign.”
More than 50% of regional production of Murcian citrus are destined to international markets. The high quality of citrus fruit production, along with the high level of food safety are some of the factors behind their international dimension. In 2006 this Region exported 506,139 tons of citrus fruits throughout the world, valued 268 million euros.
While Germany, France, UK and Italy remain the main recipients of Murcian exports, the American market (United States and Canada), is gaining importance: in 2006 were exported from Murcia 4,269 tons of citrus fruits. Producers and marketers agree in qualifying Oceania and Southeast Asian Countries - especially Japan – as the emerging markets that present greater opportunities for Murcian citrus.
The citrus fruit production sector needs to consolidate the American market (United States and Canada), which during the latest campaigns, is increasing the importation of citrus fruits from Murcia.
