Struck by tropical storms, Costa Rica announces about 50 % of losses for some cultures.
Vegetable production in Costa Rica will lose more than us$40 million this year due to continuing rains in Central America and the collapse of its road infrastructure, according to industry sources.
Vegetable growers have reported serious effects on the production of lettuce, garlic, cabbage, broccoli, and other crops, showing an almost 50% reduction.
The situation is the result of intense rains in recent weeks associated with tropical storms Matthew and Nicole. The collapse of the main highways to and from the Pacific coast and Northern zone this past week added to the problems faced by producers, as their products cannot get to market.
A national emergency decree was signed which will help the stricken producers.
