The United States consolidated its position as the most important destination, with 35.3% of total exports.
The international Peruvian lemon market closed 2024 with outstanding results, recording 76,752.7 tons exported, which marked a growth of 27% compared to the previous year. This rebound consolidates Peru as a competitive player in the global citrus trade, with Tahiti, Sutil, Eureka and Monaco varieties as the most demanded abroad, according to Peruvian media.
The United States consolidated as the most important destination, with 35.3% of total exports. Chile followed with 13.6%, and the rest of exports, which represented 51.1%, were distributed in 40 other international markets.
Fresh lemon was the presentation with the highest demand, accounting for 51.9% of shipments. This was followed by dehydrated peel with 23.8% and lemon juice with 21.7%. Other forms of processing made up the remaining 2.6%.
According to Heber Chavez, market analyst, the sustained growth of the lemon sector has averaged 18.1% per year during the last five years, reflecting the good acceptance of the Peruvian product abroad.
In terms of production, Piura leads as the most productive region, highlighted by the fertility of its valleys. Lambayeque has established itself as another key growing area, while Tumbes is in third place. The regions of Junín, Ucayali and Loreto also contribute, albeit on a smaller scale.
Production is mainly in the hands of small farmers with less than 10 hectares, followed by medium-sized producers with land between 10 and 50 hectares. Smaller-scale farmers face difficulties due to a lack of technology and financing, which limits their profitability. On the other hand, medium-sized growers have easier access to international markets and can obtain better economic benefits.
Lemon activity is emerging as a pillar for the livelihood of rural families and regional economic growth, Chavez stressed.
