British apples six weeks early
MD
This year's apple harvest is the earliest the UK has seen for at least 100 years.
A cold winter and a hot spring led to tremendous growth and producers expect a good harvest. The flowering was early and this year's crop has broken records as being the earliest. A farmer whose family was already producing apples in 1911 said that this year is the earliest for a century and beats the previous record by more than a week.
The association English Apples and Pears, representing 400 producers across the country, confirms that it is the earliest harvest since records began 35 years ago.
Regarding volume, this year will be very good which is great news for producers who have seen sales of British apples in supermarkets increase by 40% in 5 years.
