Tunisia's Pomegranate Production and Export will Soar in 2007

Next year, Tunisia's pomegranate production will reach 28,000 tons with over 35% of the country's production originating from the Gabes area in Tunisia's south and export with volume about 2000 tons for that area only as predicts The Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources of Tunisia.
Tunisia, one of the world's main producers of the ruby-red fruit, exports most of its produce to Libya, France and the Gulf countries. There are currently more than 1 million pomegranate trees in the country growing over an area of 2,600 hectares, mainly in Tunisia 's south.
In implementation of Tunisia's policy aiming at improving the quality of agricultural products, in order to ascertain their distribution on foreign markets, a project aiming at attributing a quality label to pomegranates originating from Gabes (reputedly of the best quality), has recently been presented for approval to the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources.
