CLIMATE CHANGES: impact on transformation of global fresh fruits and vegetables market trends and demand on organic biostimulants
Fresh fruits and vegetables are ones of society's key sensitivities to climate. A year of not enough or too much rainfall, a hot spell or cold snap at the wrong time, or extremes, can have a significant effect on both local and global harvesting.
While modern farming technologies and techniques have helped to reduce this vulnerability, there is some evidence that climate change is already having a measurable affect on the quality and quantity of fresh fruit and veg produces globally.
Travelling all around the world to recognize market trends and farmer’s needs Mr Hans Ten Zweege, Managing director at Holland Farming, as manufacturer of organic biostimulants known as CROPMAX, exclusively shares with us relevant global market trends. “Analyzing this year campaign in some markets we performed better than last year, in others we performed less, but what is curious: the same reason that transforms our results is climate change!”
Hans continues: “Take, for instance, the late frost, which hit fruit producers early spring this year. Both in Southern Europe (Italy and Romania) and Northern Europe, fruit trees were hard hit by low temperatures when the generative stage had already started. Result: frost byte during flowering.” He adds: “On the other hand we see the extreme drought in West Africa, where our partners, such as Holland Farming Cameroun, Universal Trade Togo and Wienco Ghana met with farmers, who were not interested to invest at all in their production, afraid of loosing all. In Eastern Europne, mainly in Ukraine, we noticed, that due to improved rootsetting after an application of 1000 ml CROPMAX per hectare, plants were able to better withstand periods of drought.”
As practice shows many farmers sought refuge in organic biostimulants to help the trees overcome the vulnerable stage in early season. Due to a CROPMAX application after the frost, the treated trees were able to give the same harvest as other years, where non treated trees showed a significant drop in production.
