The Port of Shanghai is the world leader in container handling. Activity has resumed and the volume of containers processed has now reached 90% of the normal level.
For the past few weeks, its deepwater port, Yangshan Deepwater Port, has reported a steady increase in the handling of national container ships and international lines. The average daily container throughput increased from 32,000 to 52,000 TEU, reaching 90% of the normal level.
Due to economic restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 epidemic, the volume of goods decreased until mid-March. Many empty and refrigerated containers have been left at the Shanghai port site. This originally had a storage capacity of 390,000 TEU. With the restrictions imposed, this capacity increased to 480,000 TEU.
