During the 2020-21 campaign, growers from the Limatambo valley, in the Anta province, which is in the Cusco region, cultivated and exported 232.32 tons of Hass avocado to Europe and Asia.
According to the National Agrarian Health Service (Senasa), farmers succeeded with exportation, despite the limitations due to the pandemic.
As reported by Pedro Castro, head of the Senasa Plant Health area in Cusco, Senasa continues to verify avocado production areas and inspect shipments of the fruit. They verify the compliance with phytosanitary requirements and that the product is free of quarantine pests that could limit its access to the international market. In 2021, they already examined a total of 30 properties.
This ensures that plant products meet the international requirements of importing countries such as Japan, China, Korea, Spain, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom.
Today, the main hass avocado production zone is in Limatambo with 15 sectors and 82 partners. They are part of the Avocado Fruit Producers Cooperative, who allocate 30 percent of their production to the national market, and 70 percent to the world market. For example, their avocado export in 2017 totaled 777 tons and in 2018 it amounted to 1.258 tons.
Peruvian agro-exporters project that this year international avocado shipments will total 1.102 million dollars and that it will become the second most demanded Peruvian fruit in the foreign market, after blueberries.
