Producers in Almería (Spain) are concerned due to the sharp decline in the production of fruit and vegetables. This comes after high temperatures recorded in autumn, a mild winter start and the current persistent low temperatures.
According to the Association of Organizations of Producers of Fruit and Vegetables of Almería, Coexphal, some companies can no longer comply with the programs of their clients. The situation remains similar in other producing regions.
Production shortfalls
The volumes sold of tomatoes between weeks 5 and 7 were -22% lower compared to the same period of the previous year. The same trend was observed in cucumber sales (-21%). Bell pepper and eggplant decreased -25% and zucchini decreased -15%.
From Coexphal they point out that although prices continue to be high these weeks, income does not compensate for the production deficit. Added to this panorama is the constant increase in production costs and difficulties due to the appearance of pests or viruses.
Growers hope that the high temperatures over the next few weeks may improve the situation, although it is not certain how the plants will respond to constant changes in the weather.
In 2021, Almería constituted 23% of all fruit and vegetable exports from Spain, according to data from the Customs and Excise Department of the Tax Agency.
