The total harvest for the 5 NEPG countries (Belgium, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Great Britain) is estimated at 27.9 million tonnes.
Based on expected yields and increased acreage, NEPG (North-Western European Potato Growers) estimates that potato production for the 5 countries will be 3.8% higher than last year.
NEPG (North-Western European Potato Growers) estimates that the yields of table potatoes are at the level of the average of the last 5 years. As the area has increased by 1.4% compared to last year, for the 5 producing countries (Belgium, Germany, France, Netherlands, Great Britain) the total harvest can be estimated at 27.9 million tons.
That is 3.8% more than last year. High production, but not as high as in 2017 with 29.6 million tonnes produced.
NEPG also reports large differences in yield between the different countries and also within them (large heterogeneities of yield, in connection, in particular, with the availability of water).
There is an imbalance between supply and demand. COVID-19, with containment measures and lower demand from the restaurant market is the main reason. Demand from the retail market has increased, but not enough to cover the lack of demand from the Hotel, Restaurant and Coffee (HoReCa) sector. Demand from processing plants is growing again, but not reaching the same level as before the COVID-19 crisis.
