After three years of stoppage, Honduras has resumed banana exports to the UK. Last week, according to local media, a container with a thousand boxes of Honduran bananas was sent to this market.
It is estimated that the reopening of the English market could generate at least 40,000 dollars a month in foreign currency, which represents a significant injection for the local economy.
During the period of export interruption, Ecuador was able to capitalise on the English market due to the devastating tropical storms Eta and Iota, which severely affected banana plantations in northern Honduras, making it difficult to meet demand. However, the resumption of exports does not seem to be an arduous task, as Honduran bananas are highly valued by British consumers.
The reactivation of exports to the UK also opens up new employment opportunities and provides security for producers. This will allow them to invest more in their crops and improve their access to bank credit, thanks to the stability provided by international contracts.
Banana growers are anticipating a significant increase in exports and are asking for support from the authorities so that inactive producers can access loans to meet the demand for at least 10 to 15 containers a week.
