Industry professionals want to set up an entity for the Promotion of Consumer Artichoke and thus halt the steady decline observed.
More than 70 companies in the Artichoke sector (production, marketing, industry) meet today at Fruit Attraction.
The meeting (room 5.1 Hall 5) wants to try to develop measures to curb the growing decline in consumption of artichokes. Among the goals: the creation of a body for the promotion of consumption, with the participation of professionals in all areas of production in the country: Tudela (Navarra region), Vega Baja del Segura (Alicante region) and Valle del Campo Guadaletín Cartagena (Murcia region) Zafarralla (Almería region).
Production also fell sharply in Spain, from 427,900 tons in 1990 to 226,281 tonnes in 2008 and only 195,202 tons in 2012, however, Spain is the second largest producer of artichokes in the EU after Italy. Production share mostly for industry (60%) fresh consumption accounting for only 40%. Only 12,000 tons of fresh artichokes were exported in 2012 to other EU countries.
