Jordan date production in 2006 amounted 26,000 tons, of which around 85% were exported to Arab and European Countries. Official figures released by the Agriculture ministry show that the total area cultivated with date palms is expanding at a fast rate compared to recent years. Last year it exceeded 20,000 dunums (1 dunum = 1,000 sqm), compared to 5,000 dunums in 2005.
Jordan began to produce trading volumes’ dates around the mid ‘90s, according to the Italian Institute of Foreign Trade ICE diffusing the news. Today the Country is a key supplier of the best date varieties for the European Union and the Gulf Countries.
The Department of Statistics explains that in 1998 Jordan sold around 92 tons of dates for a total value about 58,538 euros. During the following two years the exports’ value rose by 82% (amounting 324,000 euros for 538.6 tons).
During year 2002 date exports recorded a booming, reaching 991.8 tons for 470.352 euros value. Even though the Country’s production is still quite modest compared to that of other Countries, the production trend evidences a promising future for this sector.
Considering that date cultivation requires special climate conditions, it keeps limited in some areas where average temperatures are usually above 18 degrees. Therefore, about 85% of palm dates are concentrated in the South Jordan Valley of river and the remainder 15% is distributed in the areas of Azraq and the northern Jordan Valley.
In April 2005 some 12 growers of date palms founded the Jordan Association of date producers, which organizes every year seven seminars to grow the small farmers’ knowledge of the best techniques to grow palms.
