Del Monte Fresh Produce began the development of pink pineapple in 2005, then obtained approval from the FDA (Food and Drug administration) in 2017 for its marketing. Today the pineapple called Pinkglow arrives on the American market.
For more than 15 years Del Monte Fresh Produce has been working on the development of a pineapple with pink flesh and a sweeter flavor. Genetically modified, this pineapple contains pink pigment from a variety of tangerine, which gives the flesh of the fruit a new pink tone. In addition, according to the company Del Monte the Pinkglow pineapple is juicier and sweeter than a traditional pineapple and has a unique flavor reminiscent of candy aromas.
The pink pineapple comes from Costa Rica, from a selected farm with ultra-limited harvests and where the fruits are picked by hand after 24 months required for its cultivation.
Pinkglow pineapple is currently only available for sale through Tropical Fruit Box (US East Coast) and Melissa's (US West Coast) vendors who sell the fruit at $49 each, for direct delivery to US consumers.
