The Italian port of Civitavecchia, the closest to the town of Rome, is about to become a strategic point for the fruit and vegetable industry after the creation, in December 2006, of the Civitavecchia Fruit Forest Terminal (CFFT) company. It is a joint venture among the Dutch group Van Gestel, which controls the majority, the shipping and forwarding company Bellettieri and the Civitavecchia Port Company.
A wholly private investment of 10 million euros made possible the construction of the terminal, which currently covers an area of 8.600 sqm, to be possibly expanded by 2007 with some additional 5.000 sqm.
Traffic forecasts for 2007 predict 80 million tons of bananas with the Bonita label. Other kinds of fruit will be maybe added in the future. For this year it is expected the arrival of 53 vessels: the first one arrived at Civitavecchia’s dock at the end of 2006 already, loaded with containerized pineapples and bananas, as well as fish. The official carrier of the Bonita bananas at CFFT is the Ecuadorian Line (Novoa banana group).
“The realization of this terminal is extremely important for the port of Civitavecchia - Sergio Serpente of Bellettieri agency pointed out - as it inaugurates a traffic which will certainly achieve relevant levels, most of all considering the central position of Civitavecchia within the Mediterranean and the proximity of important fruit and vegetable wholesale markets such as that of Fondi and the Centro Agroalimentare (Agro-Food Center) of Rome CAR. We are also satisfied for the positive repercussions in terms of occupation and for what this traffic will bring to the economy in the area. Civitavecchia will thus become an important hub for the Mediterranean routes”.
The terminal will soon employ some hundreds people, considering workers at unloading operations, at warehouses and at connected services.
