With the beginning of autumn, the solar greenhouses in the provinces of Almería and Granada (southeast Spain) begin to prepare to supply the European markets during the winter, when continental production becomes more difficult due to low temperatures.
This year the high price of electricity and gas is expected to play in favor of the country's solar greenhouses.
According to the Cute Solar consortium, the climate of Almería and the coast of Granada, which has 3,300 hours of sunlight annually, allows crops to grow without depending on external energy sources.
For this season, a cultivated area of around 35,000 hectares is projected, the same area as last season. The consortium estimates an increase in the area of tomato, pepper and cucumber of 14%, 2%, 5%, respectively. On the other hand, zucchini and eggplant are facing a season marked by a decrease of 15% and 10%.
