Initiated experimentally in the 1950s, greenhouse banana growing continues in Iceland thanks to abundant geothermal energy (Photo: grapevine.is).
Iceland does not have an ideal climate for banana crops, but with the use of its abundant geothermal energy to heat greenhouses, the country has the most northerly banana plantations in the world.
Icelandic banana production is managed by Icelandic Agricultural University, which planted the first plants in the 1950s on an experimental basis. The area teeming with volcanic hot springs, the heat released by these sources makes the cultivation of bananas in greenhouses possible.
Harvesting takes place between April and June and the production volume fluctuates between 500 and 2000 kg per year.
