Chinese production of apples is expected to increase 5% over the previous year.
For the 2011/12 season Chinese production of apples is estimated to be 5% higher than the previous year, totalling around 35 million metric tons (MMT).
The cultivated area is estimated at 2.2 million hectares, an increase of 3% over the previous year. The area expansion comes from the western provinces such as Shaanxi, Gansu, Xinjiang and Ningxia. Concerning varieties,
Fuji apples account for 70% of production with the rest shared between Guoguang, Gala, Red Delicious, Qingguan and Meibes.
Apple exports are expected to reach 110,000 tons in 2011/12, an increase of 4% compared to last season. Imports are estimated at 80,000 metric tons (MMT), up 8%.
