Despite the health situation, the Moroccan port Tanger Med achieved good performance during the year 2020. Increase in the number of ships, increase in tonnage handled and increase in container traffic.
The Tanger Med port alone handles nearly 47% of all port tonnage in Morocco. Tanger Med announced the quantified results of its activities for 2020.
The overall tonnage handled in 2020 is 81 million tonnes, an increase of + 23% compared to 2019. A total of 5,771,221 TEU containers were handled in 2020, an increase of + 20% compared to 2019.
Tanger Med received 4,306 merchant ships in 2020, an increase of + 10% compared to 2019. Of this number, mega ships (+ 290m) were 916, an increase of + 14% compared to 2019. The number of ships that docked at the Tanger Med port is 9,702 ships (-32%), mainly due to the sharp decrease in stopovers by passenger and ro-ro ships.
International transit traffic reached a similar level to 2019 with 357,331 trucks, mainly for the agro-food sector.
The Tanger Med port provides regular connections serving nearly 180 ports and 70 countries around the world. The port is 10 days from America and 20 days from China, serving nearly 35 ports and 21 countries in West Africa with weekly connections.
