Soaring electricity and gas prices call into question greenhouse production, which was based on the principle of abundant and cheap energy (Photo: rabobank.com).
Across Europe, rising energy prices are challenging some agricultural activities. Producers plan to close their greenhouses during the winter season, other producers plan to import more products or move production to southern countries.
The surge in electricity and gas prices will not be without consequences for production in heated greenhouses, such as tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers, the production of which should be interrupted this winter. Products requiring cold storage, such as apples, onions and endives, are also likely to see their production hampered by costs that have become excessive.
For this winter, producers are already planning not to harvest their vegetables and are warning of future shortages. The volume of imported products could increase, particularly from Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt and Turkey. Some professionals are also planning to move certain productions south to areas with a warmer climate.
