In Pakistan exports of mangoes come for the first time in eight years to exceed 100,000 tons. The season is not over and professionals hope to reach 120,000 tonnes.
Last year, Pakistan exported 80,000 tons of mangoes. This year the volume has just exceeded the 100,000 tons mark for the first time since the 2011/12 season. The season is not over and the volume exported could reach 120,000 tonnes.
According to the former president of the Federation of Chambers of Commerce, cold storage is only one problem among others for Pakistan that does not export more than 5 to 7% of its total production of mangoes. The strict phytosanitary conditions of the European Union have slowed the expansion of exports. The fight against pests is a priority, as the expansion of cultivated areas and the introduction of new commercial varieties.
Mangoes from Pakistan are mainly exported to the Middle East.
