The new growing season has started well and the planting conditions are much better than last year, according to the British Onion Producers Association.
British Onion Producers Association announces a positive start for the 2019 season. The new growing season has started well and planting conditions have improved compared to last year. However, the dry conditions of the last 12 months remain a concern for producers. Groundwater levels are well below average for this time of year due to last summer's extreme drought and a relatively dry winter.
After the difficult growing season of 2018 and the low yields that resulted, British onion stocks are at very low levels. The industry is closing the gap with the new season by importing onions from countries such as New Zealand, Egypt and Chile. As a result, consumers will see more imported products in the coming months until the new season starts in late July / early August.
