The non-destructive near-infrared spectroscopy is replacing destructive chemical analysis.
In recent years, the non-destructive near-infrared and visible spectrometers has been replacing destructive chemical analysis to estimate chlorophyll, anthocyanins and soluble solids content (SSC) in apple production.
The two-year study held by German scientists Konni Biegert, Daniel Stockeler, Roy J. McCormick and Peter Braun demonstrates how future SSC predictions from the partial least square regression (PLS) model would be impacted by seasonal variation, sample size, laboratory errors, and the model itself. They also wanted to use the SSC predictions aiming to better understand apple carbohydrate physiology.
The investigation showed that there was a 0.5 percent distinction in SSC estimation by destructive methods compared with the spectrometer. The scientists also noted that fruits in the top parts of a tree have higher SSC than the apples from the lower part.
The study was performed on Braeburn apples. In order to implement the investigation, the scientists used the F-750 Produce Quality Meter by Felix Instruments. The F-750 Produce Quality Meter uses near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy to measure quality metrics such as dry matter, Total Soluble Solids (TSS or brix), color, and titratable acidity.
