Antonio Carmona, president of Palmanaranja, warns citrus growers in Cordoba (Spain) about the risk of a drop in profitability when selling below production costs. The arrival of Egyptian oranges on European markets has led to a sharp drop in prices, even for the local industry.
Carmona points out that it is impossible to compete with lower cost products from outside Europe. He proposes two alternatives: to hold out in the field until the market stabilises or to sell with caution.
He urges not to give in to a possible loss of profitability by selling at unsustainable prices and to avoid precipitating a fall in prices. He warns that the season is stagnating and requires cautious strategies.
