Decrease in apples imports
MD
Russia has reduced its imports of apples during the first 2 months of this year. Analysts from the company Fruit-Inform reported that the volume of imports of apples to Russia in January and February 2011 fell by 7.3% over the same period 2010.
This decrease in demand is a result of higher prices in Russia, higher than last year, and a declining quality of imported fruit.
Poland is still the No. 1 supplier of the Russian market with a market share of 37% over the period, followed by China, Serbia, Moldova, Belgium and Ukraine.
This decline in imports of apples could also be explained by a change in consumer demand. During the same period, imports of other fruits increased significantly such as bananas (7%), oranges (26%) and mandarins (14%).
