Egyptian citrus denied entry in Russia after the decision of Egypt to reject Russian wheat.
The Ministry of Agriculture said that over 21% of Egyptian citrus exports have gone to Russia over the past year but the "special relationship" has deteriorated with tensions on agricultural exports.
A "high-level committee" according to the Egyptian Ministry of Agriculture will conduct negotiations. Meetings with the Russian ambassador in Cairo but also in Moscow. Objective: to study the issues and try to resolve and restore the previous situation.
Egypt is the first importer of wheat in the world and the first customer of Russian grain. In August Egypt has tightened its health requirements by refusing imports which contain traces of ergot (a wheat disease). The country ended its imports of Russian wheat. Before the judgment of shipments, Russia has accused Egypt to engage in "bargain" before deciding to suspend its citrus imports from Egypt, from 22nd September.
A new agreement will certainly emerge from these discussions, the two countries need each other. Russia will strengthen its position as the first world exporter of wheat with its forecast for a record harvest this year.
