Too many flaws in the monitoring system for food security
FJ
Some politicians warn of malfunctions of the monitoring system set up in Hong Kong for food security.
In cause : the lack of supervision at container terminal Kwai Chung, the only maritime entry point for food imports. There, agents inspect imported products only if they are moved to storage areas by importers. In contrast, imports by air are prompted systematically monitored on arrival.
In January, 10 lots of Japanese carrots from Chiba Prefecture (one of the five prefectures where imports of fruits and vegetables were banned after Fukushima) came to Hong Kong container terminal.
Local media have repeated these arguments in order to sensitize consumers to the risk of certain imported products. Last year Hong Kong imported 15 093 tonnes of fruit and vegetables from Japan by sea and thus without really strict controls.
