An important region for the production of kinnow in India, the province of Punjab could record a significant decline in the volumes produced. This year the growers fear significant losses due to unfavorable weather conditions which have led to a decrease in flowering.
The Punjab region is an important region for the cultivation of kinnow which is cultivated on more than 37,000 hectares. After heavy harvests over the past 2 seasons, growers expected less production, which is common in the cultivation of kinnow. But this year, adverse weather conditions hit the orchards. Warm temperatures in February and March caused a decrease in flowering, then strong winds in March and April caused the fruits to drop.
Some farmers recorded much less flowering than in previous years and other farmers a total absence of flowering on 30% of their orchards. The losses will be significant according to industry professionals who estimate that production is likely to drop by 50% compared to the previous year.
The harvest is expected to hit the market in December.
