For this 2022 campaign, in all the production areas studied (Morocco, Spain, France) the areas dedicated to Charentais melon are down.
Forecasts for Charentais melon plantations were unveiled at the medFEL show in Perpignan. These data come from surveys carried out among operators in the sector in Morocco, Spain and France. There is a downward trend in areas dedicated to Charentais melon in all production areas for this 2022 campaign:
Forecast Morocco
Total areas of approximately 1,410 hectares, i.e. -75 hectares compared to 2021
Forecast Spain
Total estimated surface areas of approximately 4,000 hectares, i.e. -800 hectares (-16%) compared to 2021. These forecasts do not take into account the impact of weather events on the hectares actually planted, the losses not being still quantifiable.
Forecast France
Total areas of around 10,400 hectares, i.e. –1,250 hectares (-10%) compared to 2021.
The decrease in surface area impacts all production areas, with variable rates: Center-West region (-800 hectares), South-West region (-100 hectares), South-East region (-250 hectares)
The unprecedented increase in the cost of inputs (+30% on average before the conflict in Ukraine), the difficulty of raw material supplies both for production and for packing stations, logistical problems, labor problems implementation, as well as the context of sluggish consumption for fruit and vegetables, are causing fear and uncertainty for all operators.
