Japan & Australia to consider free trade agreement
Australia
Tuesday 26 April 2005
Japan and Australia have agreed to consider the possibility of a bilateral free trade agreement between the two countries.
But don't hold your breath - the initial feasibility studies are expected to take about two years and even then, the chances of a concrete agreement are slim.
The stumbling block is the agricultural sector, with Australia keen to see Japan remove tariffs and Japan likely to ask for agricultural products to be exempt from any future free trade talks.
