Recently entering the avocado market, Morocco has experienced a rapid expansion of its production and exports. The country is now positioned as the 10th largest exporter in the world and the sector is getting organized.
MAVA (Morocco Avocado Association) has just been created by the main Moroccan avocado exporters. MAVA's mission is to serve as a catalyst for the various already existing approaches to the export of Moroccan avocado. One of the objectives is to ensure and guarantee the food safety of European consumers, recipients of 90% of Moroccan avocado exports.
For several years now, the sector has been committed to an international certification process, in particular GlobalG.A.P. in order to reinforce quality standards, from the orchards to the packaging sites. The thousands of analyzes carried out make it possible to guarantee the safety of the country's exports.
During the 2020/21 campaign, Morocco exported 33,000 tonnes of avocados, most of them to European markets. The area dedicated to avocado is estimated between 6,000 and 7,000 hectares. The orchards are mostly young and should therefore experience strong growth in their production in the years to come.
Within 5 years, Morocco could export 100,000 tonnes of avocados and thus become one of the leading producers on the African continent and the Mediterranean basin, ahead of producer countries such as Spain, Israel and South Africa.
