The favorable weather conditions for fruit growth and quality will lead to a large volume of apples and pears and an increase in exports, estimated at 4% and + 6%.
After a few difficult years due to drought, a record harvest of apples and pears is expected this season in South Africa thanks to very favorable weather conditions. Precipitation levels were good during winter and spring and then summer temperatures were moderate.
According to Jacques du Preez, Trade and Markets Manager at Hortgro, South Africa could export 4% more apples and 6% more pears.
Faced with the effects of the pandemic, producers, packers and traders are all vigilant and strictly comply with established safety protocols. There are no labor problems at the production level or at the packaging level.
However, according to professionals, logistical challenges remain particularly in the port of Cape Town, mainly affecting the sea routes to the Middle East and the Far East. But above all, the shortage of containers, observed worldwide, causes availability problems and increases costs.
