In Australia, pineapple professionals are having an unusual year. A series of unprecedented meteorological events caused premature flowering which initially resulted in a huge amount of fruit.
According to local media, this abundant production ahead of schedule is now followed by a fruit shortage which has caused prices on the domestic market to soar. A pineapple is now sold for up to 14 AUD (9.32 USD), the average price in most supermarkets is 6 AUD (3.99 USD).
"So we've gone from having too much fruit in a very short period of time to not enough fruit to supply the market and that's effectively driving up prices," commented Anthony Dobson, supplier of pineapples packing around 12 million pineapples each year from farmers in North, Central and South East Queensland.
Anthony Dobson also specified that a pineapple takes 2 years to grow and that a return to a normal level of supply is only possible in 15 to 18 months.
