National disaster for the fruit sector in Chile.
Frost that hit the country could compromise very seriously fruit exports. The central region, producer of fruit and wine, is particularly affected. This is the worst frost for 84 years in areas of Coquimbo and Bio Bio, other areas are seriously affected: O'Higgins (55%), Punjab (45%) and Maule (40%).
Regarding products, the percentage of damage is estimated 61% for nectarines, 60% for plums, 57% for almonds, 48% for kiwifruit and 20% for grapes.
FEDEFRUTA gave its first estimate of losses to U.S. $ 1 billion, but experts, professionals and sector unions confess that "nobody knows the final exact amount of losses."
