The asparagus sector in Navarra is facing a time of uncertainty due to adverse weather conditions that have affected production. Although it is too early to assess the total impact on the crop, compared to the almost 4 million kilos recorded last year, price volatility is of deep concern. The UAGN union has criticized one cannery for cutting the price to farmers by 30 to 40 cents per kilo, highlighting a lack of consistency with other companies that have maintained stable prices.
ALINAR, which represents the agri-food industries of Navarra, La Rioja and Aragon, emphasizes the importance of supporting asparagus production to maintain its attractiveness. Despite a surplus of the product, ALINAR reaffirms its commitment to the quality and long-term sustainability of the crop, although it clarifies that it cannot intervene directly in pricing.
The price reduction strongly impacts farmers, especially in a context of rising production costs. This also affects more than 1,300 seasonal workers in Andalusia, whose profitability is compromised, which could make it difficult to hire local labor in the future.
Marcelino Etayo, president of the IGP Asparagus of Navarra and farmer, describes the situation as unsustainable and emphasizes the need to maintain fair prices to ensure the profitability of production. The UAGN union highlights the economic and social value of asparagus and asks the Government of Navarra for more investment in promotion, research and import control to guarantee the continuity of the crop.
