Daghestan could enter the kiwifruit club with the arrival of this new variety.
Located in the mountains of the North Caucasus, the Republic of Dagestan (Russian Federation) does not produce kiwis but the situation could change.
A biologist, Timur Gabibov, who works on plant breeding, has recently succeeded in cultivating a new variety of kiwifruit adapted to the local climate. The vine of this new variety could withstand temperatures down to -25 ° C, whereas the classical varieties are sensitive from -15 ° C.
The distribution of this new variety is not foreseen at the moment. In its "experimental platform" the scientist grows other unusual plants for Daghestan such as arbutus, quince, sea buckthorn or palm.
