Unique Haskap berries appear in Vancouver retailers
Oppy, one of the leading North American growers, marketers and distributors of fresh produce from around the world (with a Headquarters in Canada), introduced Haskap berries to customers in the greater Vancouver area. This was the first time these flavorful berries became available at retail.
The company is well - positioned to leverage its extensive retail knowledge and deep - seated industry connections to offer consumers one-of-a-kind products such as Haskap berries. With a sweet, tangy taste, the berries have a flavor that combines elements of blueberry, raspberry and blackberry. With its high level of antioxidants and anthocyanins, Haskaps offers many health benefits, including anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, and cardioprotective properties. Haskap berries are also particularly well suited as a snack for children due to their size and flavor, which have a tangy candy-like aftertaste. The University of Saskatchewan developed the modern varieties of this berry in 2000, but the berry was originally cultivated in Japan for over 200 years.
After trialing the berries with select retailers in a limited area close to the berry-growing site, Oppy tested how well the fruit held up in the commercial supply chain, its longevity, and used the trial as an opportunity to raise consumer awareness of the Haskaps. Following the successful completion of this trial, the company will aim to work with its partners to expand and scale the program to meet increased interest and demand.
Garland Perkins, Senior Manager of Insights and Innovation, said, “Oppy is continually looking for new, under-the-radar varieties that bring a lot to the table for consumers and retailers. Thanks to its versatility as a healthy snack and its ease of use from a culinary perspective, Haskap berries have plenty of untapped potential that can be realized with the right promotions and partnerships.”
Officially known as The Oppenheimer Group, Oppy cooperating with international growers to bring sustainable fresh produce to Canadian and American Markets for more than 160 years, and marketing (distributing) North American fruit and vegetables around the globe.
