The protocol recently signed between Laos and China will materialize at the beginning of next year with a first shipment of Laotian citrus fruits to the Chinese market.
The 1st shipment to China will take place early next year. Laos produces various citrus fruits (oranges, pomelo, lemons) and plans to export more than 50,000 tonnes of citrus fruits to China.
Commercial citrus production is recent in Laos. In 2017, Australian citrus rootstocks were imported to help local farmers. Now about 3,600 hectares are dedicated to citrus fruits and located in 9 regions of the country, 70% of crops are exclusively for export.
The opening in December of a Laos-China railway line should facilitate exports to the Chinese market.
China is a major destination for Laos' agricultural products, accounting for over 80% of total exports, especially bananas, watermelon, sugar cane.
